New Equipment Mitigates Wind Disruptions at Cape Town Port

This past weekend, a strong and unexpected South Easter peaked at 84 km/hr, forcing temporary delays at Cape Town Port. Wind has long been one of the key operational challenges at the terminal – often halting container handling operations and leading to significant time loss.

However, change is on the horizon. The newly introduced Rubber Tyre Gantries (RTGs), capable of operating in wind speeds up to 90 km/hr, are designed to keep operations running even during high-wind conditions.

Early analysis suggests a clear advantage: fewer wind-related closures and reduced downtime. For example, during a recent two-day wind event, old equipment resulted in 32 hours lost – compared to just 10 hours with the new RTGs.

CH Logistics, always looking for ways to strengthen reliability across the export chain, actively supports this upgrade by adapting container movement strategies to align with weather-resilient operations – including flexible slot bookings and targeted inland transport coordination.

This is a critical step forward in overcoming one of Cape Town Port’s most persistent bottlenecks.
